How did Hugh Jackman evolve to Wolverine: Feature article The Marveled insights into the MCU

Has it ever happened that an actor actually misunderstood his character in the movie?

Hugh Jackman is someone who has embodied Wolverine fully on the big screen in 9 movies and it is difficult to imagine someone else playing the character.
However, when he initially got the part, he misunderstood his character. Since he had never heard of the animal wolverine, he thought it was based on wolves!
So he actually did two weeks of research on…. wolves, and even went to an IMAX documentary about wolves in Toronto, twice.
Then on the set of 2000’s X-Men for a fight rehearsal, he went about his part the way he had prepared based on wolves’ behavior- the way they have their nose to the ground, always looking around, smelling and with the walk.
Bryan Singer was the director and after he saw his act, this is what transpired:
Singer: "It's a little weird physically. But it's interesting. "
Jackman: 'Yeah, man, I've been studying wolves and I think if we could bring that to the screen.'
Singer: 'You're not a wolf, man, you're a wolverine!' "
Jackman: 'Well, that's not an animal.'
And Singer said:, 'Yeah, it is. Go to the zoo.”
That was the embarrassing way in which he started off his character but the confusion was cleared and it all worked out pretty well in the end as he went on to define the character brilliantly onscreen.
In the process, he also achieved his life long dream of setting a Guinness World Record. As a kid, he and his brother tried to stay up and play badminton for 48 hours which he thought was the easiest way to get it.
But ultimately he set the record along with Patrick Stewart for the longest Marvel careers after clocking up almost 17 years as Wolverine and Professor X respectively.
