Sibling Sam (Tobey Maguire) and Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhall) are brother with a unique bond that gets tested as Sam joins the marines and serves his country while his wife Grace (Natalie Portman) raises the kids.

When Sam doesn't come home and assumed dead his brother Tommy fills in and helps out with Grace agreeing to it.

Sam escapes his captivity and comes back home a change man and this has ramification for Tommy and Grace as they begin to adjust to Sam

In the Sam has a hard time dealing with his new life and tries to enlist again and fails.

The climatic end deals with family and life choices that will have impact on everyone.

Siblings Sam (Tobey Maguire) and Tommy Cahill (Jake Gyllenhaal) are as far apart as brothers can be; while Sam serves his country as a Marine, Tommy is a drifter who just got out of prison. When Sam is shot down and presumed dead in Afghanistan, Tommy vows to take care of Sam's wife, Grace (Natalie Portman), and his children. Tommy and Grace become close, and when Sam unexpectedly returns home, the consequences of their actions threaten the foundation of the entire family.
