Special Guest post: Cyber Tip #16- Hisham Qaddoumi

CyTip 16:

Email attachments have changed the way we do business and made multi document sharing and processing an almost instant task across the globe but that doesn’t stop bad people from using it to their sick harmful purposes. One attachment in a spam email as simple as a PDF file can expose your whole device to hackers. To keep yourself safe from email attachment attacks, follow these simple instructions:

1- Always keep your antivirus software up to date and make sure the “Email scanning” and “Real-time web monitoring” options are enabled all the time.

2- Don’t open any attachment from an email you don’t know its source or legitimacy.

3- Even from emails you know, if you suspected that the email you receive is SPAM or the account is abused, don’t open the attachments. Contact the person you know that suspect being compromised and make sure they know about this incident.

4- Report the incident to your local anti-spam authority. In Canada please check the Spam Reporting Centre (SRC) from this URL:

http://fightspam.gc.ca/eic/site/030.nsf/frm-eng/MMCN-9EZV6S

5- Immediately delete these emails permanently after reporting. If you’re email is hosted with a web hosting provider report it to them as well.
Have a happy and safe surfing.
