True (story) The Founder and Persistence

True (Story) I recently watched the movie The Founder Michael Keaton played Roy Kroc and shared the journey he went on to create McDonalds.(spoiler alert) half way through the film there is a great moment when Roy Kroc is having conversation with the two brothers he was in business with at the time regarding what made him successful and why they failed in the end. One word: Persistence!
We all have the ability to use it and make it happen. Sadly its not a pill, book or audio that ignites it. The only person than can do is YOU!

When I began my writing and speaking career that's all I heard people say to me You are persistent! It confused me at first why they where say it, after awhile it dawned upon me. They were not doing it themselves!

Moral of the story. You don't have to watch the film to be persistent. You can do it right now! pick up the phone. make that follow up call, call the that potential client and create the momentum.

Nuff said! as the dearly departed Stan Lee would say

Special Spotlight: James McNaughton (Olympian)

1st What interested you in the bobsled?

My career in bobsled started quite differently from the traditional childhood dream becomes reality story!

I grew up loving adrenaline sports and fast machines.  In high school I was introduced to football and fell in love with the team dynamics, the explosive nature of the sport and the dedication to training that it required.  My football career continued at the University of Ottawa, where I dreamed of playing professional football one day.

Everything was on track to make a run at the CFL as I was playing well, and was in excellent physical condition, until a conversation I had with Bill (my best friend, high school teammate, home town training partner, and rival- he played at McMaster University).  He had watched the movie "Cool Runnings" which sparked the conversation of how odd of a sport bobsled was.  We began to question how anyone, especially people from Jamaica get involved in such an obscure sport.

This led to subsequent conversations after researching the sport a bit, of: "Man, they have open try outs across Canada, we should go out just to tell our kids one day that we tried out for the Canadian Bobsled team" to "Hey, I looked up the testing criteria, and we actually might be really good at this".  That's when things became a little more serious.

We were both in excellent physical condition as we took our training extremely serious, and pushed one another to the limit in our workouts.

We decided we'd give this a real shot, and changed our training programs to peak for the ID camp that was being held in July at York University.

After showing the coaches what we had in terms of speed and power, we were flown out to Calgary to see if we could actually push, and I guess the coaches were not disappointed, as the direction of both of our lives changed drastically.

Next thing we knew, my best friend and I are appointed to the Canadian Bobsleigh team and are going to be competing internationally!

Our next goal was to compete on the same sled at the 2014 Winter Olympics, but those dreams grinded to a halt in January when Bill was involved in the worst crash bobsleigh had witnessed in over 30 years.  He was hospitalized for several weeks with severe head and back injuries, and was unable to recover enough to return to the sport.

I was pretty freaked out after having my best friend nearly die but decided that I would not let our dreams die, and used that accident to motivate me when training got hard and competition got tough, and it helped me make it to Sochi.

Talk about a curve ball in my life!

I had unknowingly been training for this sport all along, and ended up representing our country at the biggest sporting event in the world 3 years after discovering the sport!

2nd What lesson can you share from journey to the Olympics in Sochi

The best lesson I can share from my journey to the Sochi Olympics is that hard work pays off.  I had a lot of work to do to be ready to compete at the Olympics 3 years after discovering the sport!

This meant I had to give up a lot in order to get up to speed, meaning, no more cottage weekends, no more parties, no more junk food, just train, eat, train, sleep, train!

Looking back, I have zero regrets for making those sacrifices, and the only memories I have of those hard years of training are the spoils of all of that work!

3rd Can you share a strategy or lesson that entrepreneurs can share in their business.

Don't worry about the end result, focus on the journey!  This motto is what guides me through life, and I can say for certain that I owe all of my achievements to it!

In the 3 years leading up to the Olympics, I was named an alternate every single year.  My family and friends were always questioning why I wasn't named to a team right away, and I even received some advice along the lines of "You don't honestly think you'll make the Olympics do you?  Maybe you should just give it up and get a real job.".

As in life, nothing is just handed to you, and instead of worrying about how I wasn't named to a team, or how I had lost in a sprint to the guy who was gunning for my spot on the sled, I worried about what I could control at the moment, and that was, how I could improve to get on a team, or to beat that guy in a sprint.  I needed to always be moving forward and couldn't afford to waste my time worrying about things that were out of my control.

If I did that, I knew the results would come, and sure enough, they did!  I wasn't much of an "individual tester" meaning I didn't perform as well on my own as I did with my team, however, teams are chosen based on individual testing results.  Each season, after being named an alternate, I was able to beat out my competition within the first couple of weeks of the season, and was always a member of the team for World Championships and the big one, the Olympics!

Had I let the end result guide journey, I would have seen each obstacle I faced as a major failure, and I can tell you for certain that I would not have made it to the Olympics!

Focusing all of my energy on the journey, helped me address the little things that you very easily overlook when you are only thinking about the end result.

My best advice for any entrepreneur is to slow it down, take things day by day, and know that if you are giving something your all, you will end up exactly where you want to be!

Networking Event yielding results!

It was Tuesday March 5th and I had got an invitation from Vito Marchese Founder of Whiteboard Studios, also has great website www.thenetworker.ca. He does event where he attracts 300 attendees for full day tradeshow and networking event.

This particular evening he held a eventing event where he was expecting about 30 entrepreneurs. I had a event to attend the next morning in Newmarket to speak at Meet up group that I am part of and I was thinking of not attending, until I got an email from Vito Marchese stating he was looking forward to me attending the and event. In the end I had to go!

It was held in the Yonge and Sheppard area at the Milestone restaurant, I had never been and was looking forward to the experience. It's a very busy area with lots of condominiums being build which is changing the landscape of  the area very quickly. Have numerous friends who live in the area, I organize ans speak at an event that is held six time a year in the area.

As I got to the Milestones entrance I was greeted by Vito Marchese and was given my name tag entered the networking area. There was a grand prize of raptors tickets for the evening so everyone had submitted their business cards.

As I began to mix and mingle with the crowd I met fellow entrepreneur Maureen Shortt,(bookeeper) we had connected at a leadership seminar and other events in the past year. I was surprised to see her due to the busy tax season that was upon us. Maureen has built her successful business mainly through referrals.

I continued to network when I met  David Gargaro an Consulting Editor, we had great conversation on the importance of having a great editor. I had my challenges with that issue with some poorly editing newsletter few months ago!

Next I met Laurie Taylor from Ferret Card, a mobile loyalty program that sounded very intriguing.

The last person I met was Karen Grant she a speaker and author of an upcoming book The Million Dollar Image-How to step into a more powerful persona, being in the same field we had a great conversation regarding the book industry and as it turned out I know her publisher Gerry Robert from Black Card Marketing. I had been in mastermind group with his partner Jean Guy Francoeur in 2011.

The evening came to an end and prizes were drawn, unfortunately I didn't win the raptor tickets!

Upcoming book: The Million Dollar Image

Few days later I got a call from Sudip Mukarajee the organizer for the Canada Job Expo Learn more.I have be recommending speakers for the seminar portion for the show in the past 3 years. We had an open spot available for the event, we need someone to speak! I was pressed into action and advised Sudip that will get back to him in 48hrs!

I picked up the phone and called Karen Grant and spoke to her briefly regarding the opportunity to speak, after the call I email quick synopsis about the event and speaking opportunity and the event. Advised to connect with the organizer to confirm if was interested in speaking.

On Monday March 11th I checked the website and saw that she in the speakers lineup! I was excited to make it happen.

 Wednesday March 13th

The day had arrived and was look for speaking and serving as the events emcee for the day. I also two new speakers to share Fatima Omar Khamissa Learn more on the Power of LinkedIn and Aline Ayoub Learn more share on HR Consultant. Bonnie Chan Learn more share her G.R.O.W system.

It was busy day we had lots of attendees and the seminar room was busy!

The day was going well and I had time to sit down and listen to some of the speakers share. Karen Grant did here presentation how important your image in your daily life is. Near the end she shared picture of her upcoming cover of her book when she said " I am currently looking to interview professional with expertise on mentorship, coaching and other topics for the back end of my book"

That got my attention and made a note of that!

Karen had another commitment after her talk and could not stay, I thank her for coming and expressed interest in learning more about the opportunity to participate in her book.

On  March 26th we met at Starbucks at Front and Jarvis for a coffee to learned more about her book and journey of success.  She asked for permission to record our conversation and I obliged. I shared with her my journey of how I met my mentors and the impact they had made on my life. I had email her a copy of my book How to Attract a Mentor on Business, Life and Success and video clip of talk that did few years ago. She was intrigued and impressed with the success I had achieved.

We had a great conversation and look forward to reading her book which is coming out in July 2013, so stay tuned.

Movie Review: Door to Door

An inspiring movie to watch based on a true story of Bill Porter the traveling salesman. He sold Watkins products door to door for many years.

William H. Macy does a sensational portrayal of Bill Porter, from his mannerism to the emotions he went through in his journey.

Through persistence and determination he succeeded in doing it through walk and talking a great deal.

 Moral of the story:

Strive for you dreams and believe in your ability and you will achieve them!

"Macy delivers the goods. An unforgettable character. An inspirational movie." -Noel Hoslon, New York Newsday

Power of Social Mentorship

Earlier this year I began a new journey in speaking for well know social media company based out of Boston. I had started using their services in October 2011 and by January 2012 they had hired me to sell and speak about their social media platform.

It was an exciting opportunity to gain great credibility with them and for my professional brand. I quickly signed the contract on January 25th and had a speaking engagement the next day! That how much I want to speak and get moving.
Regional Director who have admired for speaking style has been my coach , encourage and mentor even prior to this journey.

As I began my speaking in the Toronto area I reported  talk to her every Monday for a few months to share were her how everything was coming along. Had sent here some videos of my early talks and she had given me some written reviews.
As the months passed she had some concerns that I has speaking to small crowds and also groups that may not be great target market for our products. (We had a free offers to try the various social products)

I understood and respected her point of view, but I had to keep speaking and networking to find those key organizers of more influencial groups in Toronto.

As summer ended I had built great momentum and my numbers were beginning to increase and I began to get referrals from various contact I had online and offline.

My regional director began to started saying "Your a Rock Star!"  I didn't know how to respond, I just  said "Thank you and smiled!"

I had done a some corporate speaking engagement outside the Toronto group to couple of women's group and corporate groups and the feedback that we had got was  very positive.

Head into October and November my schedule begin to fill and had to really keep track on my speaking engagement and referrals that were coming in. I had signed to a local community college to use our email marketing service and the revenue from just that one client was good to start, many more began to come after that.

Going out networking, asking questions, meeting various types of organizer of events and persistently follow up led to the speaking engagement and joint venture opportunities happen.

I currently communicate via email and voice mail my regional director and she has been instrument in giving me the feedback and encouragement to succeed in become a dynamic speaker and trainer.

Look forward to sharing Power of Mentorship at Motivational Monday on Monday November 26th in Toronto at the Pilot Tavern. Going to be an awesome evening!
