It Doesn't have to Be Crazy at Work: Book Review

Jim's Review

It was powerful read with lots of strategies, tip and expert advice on how to run a  company successfully!

10 out of 10 stars

About book

In this timely manifesto, the authors of the New York Times bestseller Rework broadly reject the prevailing notion that long hours, aggressive hustle, and "whatever it takes" are required to run a successful business today.

In Rework, Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson introduced a new path to working effectively. Now, they build on their message with a bold, iconoclastic strategy for creating the ideal company culture—what they call "the calm company." Their approach directly attack the chaos, anxiety, and stress that plagues millions of workplaces and hampers billions of workers every day.

Long hours, an excessive workload, and a lack of sleep have become a badge of honor for modern professionals. But it should be a mark of stupidity, the authors argue. Sadly, this isn’t just a problem for large organizations—individuals, contractors, and solopreneurs are burning themselves out the same way. The answer to better productivity isn’t more hours—it’s less waste and fewer things that induce distraction and persistent stress.

It’s time to stop celebrating Crazy, and start celebrating Calm, Fried and Hansson assert.

Fried and Hansson have the proof to back up their argument. "Calm" has been the cornerstone of their company’s culture since Basecamp began twenty years ago. Destined to become the management guide for the next generation, It Doesn't Have to Be Crazy at Work is a practical and inspiring distillation of their insights and experiences. It isn’t a book telling you what to do. It’s a book showing you what they’ve done—and how any manager or executive no matter the industry or size of the company, can do it too. learn more and buy book

Journey to taking my first Uber ride!

   Thursday October 25

I had to take Uber from Finch Subway station to get to Richmond Hill Country club to help out a friend with an event.

I download the App on my phone in the morning. When I got to Finch Station I did some administrative tasks and I was ready for my first ride.

 I was really excited!

Open up the app and enter my destination in a few seconds I was given some choices and waited for instructions

Very quickly I was given drive and the licence place of the car and where to meet.

Unfortunately I went to the wrong spot but quickly communicated with the drive via the app and went across the street and met him

His name was Andy and he been doin Uber for ten months and was enjoying it very much. It was quick 20 minute ride and we arrive at the destination

I said "Thank you" He said "your welcome thanks for the conversation"

He pressed the app for complete and he signaled if it was 5 star rating I said "for sure" and with that he was on his way for the next pick up

Evening ride

In the evening I took an Uber again from my friends office on Finch and Allen road area back to Downsview Station.

It was great ride with Mohammed and of course a 5 start rating

Moral of this story: It was an Uberrific day!

The new money of the 21st Century has arrived: Crytpocurrency

I recently attended the 4th Annual Fintech and Funding : Velocity event in Toronto on March 5th and 6th.  Speakers had come to share insights, strategies and stories on the new monetary phenomenon that has taken the world by storm in recent months.

Blockchain – Cryptocurreny  - Alternative Investing

March 5th Day 1

It was held at the old Toronto Stock Exchange at King and Bay. It has been used since the mid 1980’s, such a great place for the leading experts in the cryptocurrency to share they insights to 500+ attendees.

There were keynotes, panel discussions, lunch & learn and ask the expert sessions throughout the day.

Walking around listening and learn throughout the day my skepticism turned to the reality that this new currency was going to change and alter our monetary currency in the few years.

As I continued to walk through the various session I began to hear stories of bitcoin transaction that were already created in selling homes and new companies have started and were succeeding.
There a few books that I saw during the day that dealt with this new digital currency.

1st  Blockchain Revolution by Don Tapscott and Alan Tapscott

2nd Cryptoassets:  The Innovative Investor’s Guide to Bitcoin and Beyond by Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar

I sat and listened to Tony Sabeta from Aird & McBurney LP share a lunch and learn about Unleashing You Blockchain IP Strategy. He shared some basic information how new start-ups were creating money using Blockchain.

As the day continued I met various attendees and exhibitors on various types of cryptocurrency that was available in the cryptocurrency system.

As we headed into the cocktail hour I was continued to meet more exhibitors and speak to some of the attendees and listen to what they learned day-long conference.

They felt more informed and education on cryptocurrency and had the necessary information to continue learning more about it.

March 6th Day 2
The second day was a short afternoon session that was held at Denton’s one the Gold Partners of the event.

They were four speaking session dealing with a more in-depth education on cryptocurrencies.
Elena Sinelnikova from CryptoChicks shared an amazing powerpoint presentation on Blockchain 101 that the entire audience found very educational and insightful how exactly Bitcoin, Blockchain mechanisms worked

There was also a panel discussion on Regulations, Compliance and Taxes which had representatives from Denton’s Canada LLP & Deloitte Canada answer all sort of questions.

It became very apparent that the regulatory organization in U.S.A and Canada have started to learn, understand and begin to put together regulations to deal with the new cryptocurrencies that are available worldwide

In conclusion I would state the Cryptocurrency has been around since 2012 which has already began to change the way we deal and work with various currencies from credit cards, money and the exchange of business services.

The impact is real and the result is this the following.

Cryptocurrency are the new digital technology of the 21st Century and have made an impact on how we have done commerce.

It will continue to evolve and be revolution of money that will begin to dominate and reflect how we value the money we make and the way will spend and invest it moving forward.

Special event review: Acces Employment Speed Mentory event

                     Wednesday May 17,2017

It was evening that I will never forget.

I have been attending the Acces Employment event as a mentor for the past 5 years. It has been amazing experience to listen and learn from professional and entrepreneur who have aspirations to start their own buisiness in the near future

On this night I was ready to listen and offer my advice to participants sitting across from me  As the night went on I heard ideas, potential business products and even some potential business partnerships!

Nothing really impressive that would make my night. It was until the last mentee sat infront of me.

When I look at him at first he looked like a biker that had just got out of prison!

Was I way wrong, His name was Niche who had arrived from Greece earlier in the year. I started to really excited ( I am of Greek descent)

He present me with a business plan, logo and monetary funds he had secured from government agencies and friends. Close to 90K

This was the WOW moment of the night!  I got up and hugged him. Everyone in the room look astonished and confused.

I said "This is what Greek do when they meet!"

                   The entire room laughed

It was great way to end the evening to see that he done his homework and was ready to execute his plan.

                      Fast forward to January 2018.

He has secured a place in the Queen and Dufferin area and is scheduled to open in mid February 2018.

                     Stay tuned...
