True (story) The Founder and Persistence

True (Story) I recently watched the movie The Founder Michael Keaton played Roy Kroc and shared the journey he went on to create McDonalds.(spoiler alert) half way through the film there is a great moment when Roy Kroc is having conversation with the two brothers he was in business with at the time regarding what made him successful and why they failed in the end. One word: Persistence!
We all have the ability to use it and make it happen. Sadly its not a pill, book or audio that ignites it. The only person than can do is YOU!

When I began my writing and speaking career that's all I heard people say to me You are persistent! It confused me at first why they where say it, after awhile it dawned upon me. They were not doing it themselves!

Moral of the story. You don't have to watch the film to be persistent. You can do it right now! pick up the phone. make that follow up call, call the that potential client and create the momentum.

Nuff said! as the dearly departed Stan Lee would say

You have great work and life and experience and you decided to write a book, Can you share why?

I wrote this book Jim because 1st   it validates my Purpose. I believe we are all books being lived out. I am a page in your book Jim and you are a chapter in mine.  That said we all have a message to share that can make this world a better place by personally developing ourselves.

Most of us just choose to exist rather than living. This brings me to my 2nd reason.  Living to me is leaving a legacy behind for those to follow when I am beyond the grave. Leaving a legacy allows you to transcend time.

I believe professionals, working a career/job should look into entrepreneurship because being and entrepreneur, you get to control your own economy.   85% of the people you meet do not like their job. They are unhappy, miserable and give off negative vibrations. When you find your PURPOSE, which I can help you with and mix it with PASSION, you can MONETIZE it because everything can be monetized. Most people want to spend time with their family & friends doing what they Love but they are stuck in a rut and dying daily. I have discovered my Purpose & Passion and I am living my Dream.

2nd
Why should professionals working a career look into looking into entrepreneurship and having a plan

I can sum up the answer to your Question in one word but I am sure you want the long version.
Jim I want you to imagine I have a pair of binoculars in my hand. Is it safe to say before the binoculars was a product it was an idea? Is it safe to say the idea came about because the binoculars was a solution to a problem? Therefore the binoculars came into existence with Purpose.

Let's shift now to this earth. Man has learned that every living thing on this earth from the birds to the bees and the water to the trees, has a Purpose! I conclude with this, if man's creations has a purpose, and all of creation has purpose, why not man?  I believe each and everyone of us was given certain gifts and talents that when discovered, harness and practiced will lead us to our destiny.

Special Guest post: Looking for job is not what it is cracked up to be!

When I made the decision to go to look for a job, I never knew what I was getting into! I sent out resumes, cover letters and went on many interviews.

My experience is not new, but the companies that I interviewed with from Fortune 100 to small mom and pop companies really opened my eyes to the craziness out there. I did some crazy work to prove myself also and met some wonderful people.

I also met some certified crazy people. Just because I have owned my own business in the past and currently does not mean I am too over qualified or under qualified.

I just want a chance to be me!

That does not give you the opportunity to belittle me or others.

I am not better than others! I just want a chance. I bring a lot to table.

If I had a wish list it would be to work for a not for profit or Charity in communications and marketing (my speciality along with sales)

The non-response I have from companies are just plain rude. I am a good person and have a great work ethic.

1st

You made the transition from a long standing career in the corporate field to getting into the coaching and speaking field.  What did you learn along the way?

There are a couple of key messages: doing what you love and building a support network around yourself. I had a wonderful, long career at a large, global company and when I decided to go out on my own, the biggest thing for me was deciding what my values were in my life and career, what I enjoyed doing the most and was really good at, and then finding a way to do that on my own.

It can be hard slogging at times, especially at the beginning, so loving what you do every day makes all the difference in the world. The other key for me was creating a support network; I have a coach, accountability partners and mentors that I can lean on when needed, and, more importantly, who give me a push when needed. In the corporate world, there is a built-in support network, but when you are an entrepreneur, you need to build it on your own.

Without loving what I do, and without my team behind me, entrepreneurship would be much more difficult.

Can you share some strategies and tips on the power of having goals and how to achieve them?

It’s simple, but not easy. Research shows that people who have clear written goals are ten times more likely to achieve them than those who do not. Five simple steps you can take are: i) decide what you want (write out 10 goals for career and life), ii) make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Aligned with your values, Realistic, Timebounded), iii) write them out every single day, iv) develop a plan (a chronological list of the steps you need to take to achieve each goal) and then v) do at least one thing every single day that is on that list, to move you towards accomplishment of your goals.

This takes time and effort, however every minute spent planning can save up to ten minutes in execution, because you know exactly what to do to get where you want to go. You don’t head out to a new destination without looking at a map. Similarly, you can’t achieve your goals if you don’t know the steps you need to take to get there.

Invest time now, and the results will come.

1st You made a transition from working in the fashion industry to starting your photography business. What was the motivating factor to make the change?

My decision to go into fashion was made early in life. After graduating from Ryerson University, I worked as an in-house designer and pattern maker for a manufacturer in Toronto, in addition to creating a women’s wear line. I spent tremendous hours working both jobs. Burned myself out, physically and financially, just to make things happen. A few years into what sometimes felt like struggle, the fashion career was not working out the way I hoped. After barely breaking even producing a collection for four years, I clued in that perhaps it wasn’t for me. On the manufacturing side – things shifted, and I ended up “product developing” more so than the hands-on design I really enjoyed. I craved change.

Before working in the industry, I held a job at a camera store. Having met several fashion photographers, lead me to working as a part time fashion stylist and makeup artist. The hours spent on set enabled me learn studio photography and lighting, it was a natural transition to another creative genre. I’ve been a hobbyist photographer for years, it was something I loved and experimented with, but didn’t think I could make a career out of.

In 2005 I made a career jump, and joined a shared photography studio. The first years of building my business were tough. I was lucky to have a few helping hands, people who were instrumental to my growth. Although having some trying times, I knew photography was my calling because there would  always be something amazing and unexpected around the corner.

I’m glad I woke up one day and decided to listen to my inner voice. Freelancing is a lifestyle that is both rewarding and challenging. The trade off of never knowing what to expect, is getting to do what I love for a living.

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” (Confucius)

2nd Having ongoing business is key in creating success in any industry. Can you share few strategies that have let to referral success in your business?

A quality product or service is essential to growing a client base. Selling a service is more difficult, and quality can definitely add value to what you offer.  Some things that go beyond quality are consistency and overall experience.
Being easy to work with, polite and attentive goes a long way. My clients can depend on me in case they lose images or need something completed in a shorter time frame. I provide the best possible experience, by being reliable, consistent, and deliver a quality product.

Because every client is different, their needs and expectations will vary; the key is being a good listener. The easier I make it for my client, the higher the chances of them giving me referrals or hiring me again. Being likable and understanding your client’s needs are just a few key components to gaining new and repeat business.
