Time Management: Now For Steps 3, 4 & 5 But…

Continued from previous articles 1st Article

Earlier this week I shared that the idea you can fix your time management issues is all a HOAX, a sham, perpetuated by "business coaches" and consultants who want billable hours to build revenue from the same business pain over and over again.

Due to the resounding positive response to our own 10-Steps To Conquer Time Management I felt compelled to share them with you.

But it is still a HOAX that you can actually fix your time management issues.

It is only with our final steps #9 & #10, the 2-True Easy Steps To Conquer Time Management,  the 2-Steps no "business coach" or consultant dare share or lose billing hours, that the solution to Time Management can be found.

Here are Steps 3, 4 & 5 of our 10-Easy Steps to Conquering Time Management:

Step #3:  Start the work

Obvious yes...but let's not overlook it as a key step.  I you never start work on a project it will certainly never be accomplished.

Want to get to the 10-Easy Steps to Conquer Time Management and find out the 2-True Easy Step plus so much more, check out this resource right HERE

Step #4:  Negotiate time & interruptions with stakeholders

Whether it is family, friends or business colleagues and bosses, when work needs to get done then negotiate the time you need to do it and set parameters for interruptions.

Having done that though you must live to your own side of the negotiation.  If you ask the family for peace and quiet to say write your book from 10:00AM to 5:00PM then don't be found watching the Masters with a beer or spritzer (for the women golfers) at 2:00PM.  If you do, you run the risk that the next time you contract for time with your stakeholders it will fall flat because you broke your own rule.

Step #5:  Time Block & Batch Process

In simple terms, use your calendar to make appointments with yourself to get work done.  Then protect them as if they are the most important meetings you will have (yes with just you) because they may very well be.

If the work involves redundant work then batch that redundant work together and do it all at one time.

The next 5-Easy Steps will follow over the next few days but remember it is all a HOAX, a sham, that you can fix your time management issues until we get to THE 2-True Easy Steps being Steps #9 & #10.

Perpetuated By "Business Coaches" & Consultants

I was recently asked to present a 60-minute webinar on how to resolve Time Management issues to an international group of business owners.

My first reaction was..."are you serious?  Doesn't everyone know by now how to manage their time effectively?"

Talk about a topic that has been beaten to death.

Still I persevered and prepared my own "Conquering Time Management; 10-Easy Steps"

Well the positive feedback was so overwhelming I feel compelled to share these 10-Easy Steps to Conquer Time Management here for all of my business friends.

But I need to be honest with you!

The idea you can fix your time management issues is all a HOAX, a sham, perpetuated by "business coaches" and consultants who want billable hours to build revenue from the same business pain over and over.

Don't get me wrong, Easy Steps 1 - 8 To Conquer Time Management are indeed powerful but it is only in Steps #9 & #10 that we find the 2-True Easy Steps To Conquer Time |Management.  These are the 2-Steps no "business coach" or consultant dare share or lose billing hours

But I don't want to jump ahead and so will begin at the beginning.....with 10-Easy Steps to Conquering Time Management:

Step #1:  Set the Objective and reverse engineer the process

An effective method for ensuring projects/work are completed on time is to set the date by which the project must conclude, the drop-dead date if you will.  Then reverse engineer the process that gets the project to that point.  How much by when if you will.  Be specific...be very specific at each step in terms of what outcome by what date

Want to get to the 10-Easy Steps to Conquer Time Management and find out the 2-True Easy Step plus so much more, check out this resource right HERE

Step #2:  Chunk Down

In the process of reverse engineering projects/work, break the work down into the smallest components.  It is easier to move mole hills then mountains.  The work will get done and more likely on time if the pieces of work are smaller.

The next 8-Easy Steps will follow over the next few days but remember it is all a HOAX, a sham, that you can fix your time management issues until we get to THE 2-True Easy Steps being Steps #9 & #10.

You made the transition from a long standing career in the corporate field to getting into the coaching and speaking field.  What did you learn along the way?

There are a couple of key messages: doing what you love and building a support network around yourself. I had a wonderful, long career at a large, global company and when I decided to go out on my own, the biggest thing for me was deciding what my values were in my life and career, what I enjoyed doing the most and was really good at, and then finding a way to do that on my own.

It can be hard slogging at times, especially at the beginning, so loving what you do every day makes all the difference in the world. The other key for me was creating a support network; I have a coach, accountability partners and mentors that I can lean on when needed, and, more importantly, who give me a push when needed. In the corporate world, there is a built-in support network, but when you are an entrepreneur, you need to build it on your own.

Without loving what I do, and without my team behind me, entrepreneurship would be much more difficult.

Can you share some strategies and tips on the power of having goals and how to achieve them?

It’s simple, but not easy. Research shows that people who have clear written goals are ten times more likely to achieve them than those who do not. Five simple steps you can take are: i) decide what you want (write out 10 goals for career and life), ii) make them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Aligned with your values, Realistic, Timebounded), iii) write them out every single day, iv) develop a plan (a chronological list of the steps you need to take to achieve each goal) and then v) do at least one thing every single day that is on that list, to move you towards accomplishment of your goals.

This takes time and effort, however every minute spent planning can save up to ten minutes in execution, because you know exactly what to do to get where you want to go. You don’t head out to a new destination without looking at a map. Similarly, you can’t achieve your goals if you don’t know the steps you need to take to get there.

Invest time now, and the results will come.

Book Review: Chaos- How Business Leaders Can Master The Power of Focus

In was been experience to meet James Burgess in 2011 and since them we met at numerous networking events and seminar. Recently attended his book launch for his first book  Chaos-How Business Leaders Can Master The Power of Focus. Below are some insight and strategies that I learned from reading his book

  On your journey

  It's About Your Life

"Your Life Primary Objective is about leading  a life that is consistent with your innermost desires, core values and beliefs. It's a life that "feels right" every day and gives you a deeper sense of fulfillment  and meaning with every year that passes. You live this life intentionally rather than randomly."

  It's  All about You

" Your LPO is unique to you. It's about  what you truly want for yourself. It's not about the obligations you have to others, and it's not about what others expect of you. Think only about yourself and what you want your life to be like. That's difficult for many of us."

 On Focus

"Here is a final thought on focus, In the education system, listening begets learning and learning begets knowing. But it does not automatically follow that knowing begets doing. With knowledge comes enlightenment and a shift in emotions. But a shift in emotions rarely has lasting effect. There are simply too many triggers to prompt us to reengage in the unwanted activities which will only result in bringing us down again.Lasting change comes from shift in behaviour, not a shift in emotions. With this book I hope to motivate you, but in order to support that emotional shift, I also want to give you the opportunity to engage in a shift in behaviour through the various exercises that are included in the following chapters"

On Achieving goals

"We live in a busy world. Many entrepreneurs confuse activity with accomplishment. Many of us are so busy we find it difficult to stop long enough to ponder such things. Let's face it. We can never achieve success in life without first considering where we want to go. We wouldn't set sail on the ocean without some sort of destination in mind in the hopes of getting somewhere.Without direction, we would be lost and just drifting"

On Customer retention

" An important acronym to be familiar with is KYC or  "Know Your Client". If you know your customer, then you can set up your communication interaction to match what they want. Many of us are engaged in some form of  constant contact marketing to clients and prospects. So if we just blanket or bombard our customers with the same message, we run the risk of frustrating them to the point that they either stop listening, or worse stop being our clients. The tighter you can categorize  your customer, the more effective your constant contact will be."

"Focus, folks! Focus and practice." James M Burgess

On Business planning

"Therein lies one of the most profound reasons we don't business plan effectively. Of our own accord, we simply will not stretch our comfort zone and intentionally commit ourselves to activities that may very well enhance our business's financial performance several magnitudes because we are scared of the commitment of having to do them. After all, if we know what the right activities were, and if they were easy to do, everyone would be doing them."

"Business Planning is important, it has been broken. It can be easy, fast, sustainable and entirely practical!" James Burgess

As you have read above the are many great strategies and areas that you can learn,do and apply to create long lasting result in your mission. Get a copy of this book and attend a session soon. My mentors always said "Put yourself in the position to win" all the time.

This is a resource that will enable you to do that.Starting today!

How to Make Quality Networking Connections

They say it’s not about what you know but who you know – well in business the way to meet people is by networking. Furthermore, attending various business events in your local city is a great way to get your name out there and meet plenty of new potential clients at the same time. However networking is by no means easy – and it’s certainly not just about showing up.
Here are 5 key things to help you grow your business through networking in 2013:

1. Research
There are many different types of events out there, each with its own style and format. Some events are membership based – while others can be more casual. Regardless of the type of event you attend, be prepared and know what to expect before you arrive.

2. Objectives
Be clear on what your networking objectives are. Are you looking to grow your network of contacts? To sell a specific product? Perhaps you’re promoting an upcoming event. Either way, be clear on your objectives for attending the event and you’ll certainly maximize your results.

3. Listen
When at a networking event the best thing you can do is listen. Ask plenty of questions and get to know the people in the room. As the conversation flows, you’ll also have a chance to tell others about your own business as well.

4. Introduce
Once you’ve had a chance to meet various business contacts at the event you’ll want to keep the connections flowing by helping to introduce others in the room. Help others meet and get connected by making strategic introductions – it will help you make a great first impression.

5. Follow Up
Following up with your networking contacts is key for long term success. Be sure to connect through LinkedIn, various social media channels, email, mail, telephone and even face-to-face meeting when the time is right

Follow these 5 steps and you’ll be sure to have plenty of networking success in 2013!
