The Age of Persuasion- How Marketing Ate our Culture: Book Review

   Jim Pagiamtzis review
An amazing book full of stories, strategies that can make an impact for your business in the 21st century!

About book:
The ad men behind CBC Radio’s The Age of Persuasion combine lively social history and years of industry experience to show how the art of persuasion shapes our culture.

Witty, erudite and irrepressibly irreverent, The Age of Persuasion provides a hugely entertaining — and eye-opening — insider’s look at the ever-expanding world of marketing.

The Age of Persuasion is for those who say “advertising doesn’t work on me” as well as those who want to understand how this industry has become inseparable from modern culture. Using their popular CBC Radio series as a starting point, Terry O’Reilly and Mike Tennant tell the fascinating story of how modern marketing came of age — from the early players to the Mad Men of the 1960s and beyond. With insider anecdotes and examples drawn from pop culture, they also probe deeply into the day-to-day workings and ethics of a business that is rapidly evolving in the age of Facebook and YouTube. learn more and buy book

Event Review: DECA Pre #ICDC in Mississauga

It was an amazing day of learning, sharing and socializing in Mississauga,ONT

This was a DECA special event preparing students for the DECA championships in Anaheim, CA in a few months.

The goal of the days was for the students to share their presentation with trainers from various industries and get their feedback on improving their final presentations they have to make in a few short weeks.

Dianne Ojar Ali and Sujit K Reddy also joined me for the day, We had done some previous events with DECA earlier this years.

I was excited to learn and share feedback on their powerpoint and presentation skills.

The students that were at my table were Jessica and Megan and before they day was over they had treated to a few strategies that I was going to us in my career moving forward!

Megan O'Donnell had the biggest surprise from her presentation when she revealed that this case study was actually being used by the business owner!  It was amazing to see that all her social media strategies were being used and were beginning to show results.

Jessica had uncovered branding fault with Nivea skin cream. Highly encourage her to reaching out to them to share her findings. She said she would!

At the end of the day these students had learning better presentation, public speaking skills , how to leverage their personalities

Look forward to them returning back with 20+ medals for Anaheim, CA in late April

Book Review: Marketing in the Groundswell

"Groundswell is full of strategies, tips and amazing case studies that can learn, do and apply and make your business shine bright and garner the attention it deserves!" Jim Pagiamtzis Founder of 21 Connections and Core Certified Solution Provider Constant Contact since 2011

Since Groundswell was published in April of 2008, two things have happened: The global economy has gone into the dumper; and at the same time, marketers have fallen in love with social technologies." So states author Josh Bernoff in his introduction to Marketing in the Groundswell, which offers vital information that everyone involved in marketing or in communicating with customers' needs to know.

The book includes three core chapters from the original bestseller that focus on market research, marketing, and spreading word-of-mouth among your best customers.

Sure, you already know that customers are writing about your products on blogs or talking about your brand on Twitter and Facebook. Now, turn that interest into opportunity and profit. In these economic times, marketers like you are increasing their investment in social technologies, while cutting back on more traditional expenses.

Why? Because they work-no matter the economic climate. Marketing in the Groundswell shows you how you can build social applications, measure their results, and use the social technology movement to your company's advantage

1st:

You have been business owner for a couple of  years. Can you share on business success lessons from you journey?

I bought a business that I've had no prior knowledge or experience with it. A distribution company that sell variety of products to cafes & restaurants such as paper/plastic cups, all kind of plastic trays, chemicals, paper products and some food . We had a warehouse, a delivery truck and of course employees. I had to start selling about 350 items from day one, created relationships with existing and new customers as well with suppliers. Huge task that people are astonished how did I took the risk and managed doing it.

I have an extensive experience in sales and marketing, a people person and good management skills.  I had a dual role of  operations & sales manager. The learning curve was very short, I worked more than 12 hours a day and eventually succeeded to triple the sales. I eventually the sold the business after four years.

The lessons from this journey - one has to be a risk-taker plus having a skills-set  of creativity, flexibility & an ability to build and maintain personal relationships, all the above helped me tremendously  along the way to achieve my targets.

2nd

Sales is an ongoing journey and process of implementation. Can you share some sales strategies?

I believe sales is an art and to be a successful sales person, you must love communicating with people, be a great listener and problem solver, be genuinely interested in helping customers and looking constantly as to how to serve them better and address all their concerns & demands.

Those who lack patience or don't have the above abilities "under their skin",  wouldn't not succeed in fulfilling this job, those are the ones who wish just to close the deal as quickly as possible, and move on to the next customer, with no interest at all in following up with the old ones or referring back to their requests...

If you aren't willing to call back your customer within 15-30 minutes (very uncommon response time in Toronto) or respond to his email within that time frame - I foresee that within short period of time, he would turn his back on you!
