The Age of Persuasion- How Marketing Ate our Culture: Book Review
Jim Pagiamtzis review
An amazing book full of stories, strategies that can make an impact for your business in the 21st century!
About book:
The ad men behind CBC Radio’s The Age of Persuasion combine lively social history and years of industry experience to show how the art of persuasion shapes our culture.
Witty, erudite and irrepressibly irreverent, The Age of Persuasion provides a hugely entertaining — and eye-opening — insider’s look at the ever-expanding world of marketing.
The Age of Persuasion is for those who say “advertising doesn’t work on me” as well as those who want to understand how this industry has become inseparable from modern culture. Using their popular CBC Radio series as a starting point, Terry O’Reilly and Mike Tennant tell the fascinating story of how modern marketing came of age — from the early players to the Mad Men of the 1960s and beyond. With insider anecdotes and examples drawn from pop culture, they also probe deeply into the day-to-day workings and ethics of a business that is rapidly evolving in the age of Facebook and YouTube. learn more and buy book

Journey to 1000 blogs!
It has been an amazing journey sharing insights and experiences with the world. It all started 5 years ago, I was speaking to an engineering company about networking and sales, during the end of the presentation I had mentioned the power of blogging (at the time I was researching)
The engineers were very interested in leverage the blog with on the email signatures, adding value on expertise in their industry to clients and network.
Few weeks later I started my first blog and it was to begin a journey that would give me the opportunity to share insights on experiences that I was having in Business.Life and Success.
The first blog I shared caused an interested internet ripple. It caused a referral! I had also shared contest on 2 others sites. That's a great way to start for sure.
Since then the blog has evolved in some many ways. I have shared events, interviews, videos, articles and guest posts. In July 2012 started doing book reviews and that has turned it an great journey (more on that later)
Five years have gone by very quickly, I am glad I made the decision to start the blog and share, leverage my expertise to the world!
The writing has evolved where I expanded the articles into e-books on topics from Networking, Mentorship, Blogging, Engagement Marketing. Through that I have shared these topics to various groups all over GTA and United States.
In 2011 I attended an event on How to Publish a book held by Gerry Robert.I was part of mastermind group for entire year in Toronto. I had met Jean Guy Franceour who had connected our group with this awesome event.
It was that weekend that I had come to conclusion that I could talk everything and turn it into a book! It was exciting weekend to make this decision amongst great friends. Fast forward to September 2013 and I get a call from Author and Speaker Dianne Ojar-Ali about the status of my book.
I had inspired Dianne Ojar Ali to write her book Mrs. Fraud and You and it she wanted to see when my book would get done. She had me cornered and I couldn't get her to change the subject!
Due to her pressure and professional threats! (Wash her mini-van or else)That was enough. In less than 72 hours I had cover done and ISBN application complete! It was great experience to work with amazing graphic artist Michael Trapani from Icube8 Create to put the together the front and back covers. view covers
When I first started blogging I never thought it would turn into a book!
As you have read making this decision has open many doors and I have shared my story with friends in my network and they have to have started blogs. Rania Effat started Living out my purpose in December 2011. Learn more and others have started a blog to share their views and insights on life.
Huge thank to amazing connections online who have been part of this awesome journey.
Moral of the story: Make a decision to start a blog today, it will take you on a journey to
create experiences and lessons that an impact your life and others!

Power of Networking yields to a start of new career!
It late November I attended the 1st annual Gentlemen's Expo at the Metro Convention Centre, a two day event for men to check out various booth on Wine, cars, beer and play some interactive games
On Sunday there was an opportunity to break a Guiness World Record the for the most men in one place with the most staches (Movember cause to raise money for prostate research) more on this later.
It was amazing day I as went through the event trying out the various beer they had available. (Stella Artois was there) They had busy booth all weekend!
There were interactive games and sports cars for the past, present and future on display. There was an afternoon session with the some of current and previous Dragons speaking Brett W. Wilson , Jim Trelving and Bruce Croxon sharing their insights on Business.Life and Success.
There were multiple booths from MLSE Sports Entertainment representing the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Marlboros and Toronto Soccer Team TFC.
A booth that caught my interest was The People Store. I introduced myself and ask them a few question. Turns out they were hiring and had opportunities coming up in February 2014. I took their business cards and continued on my way.
Had a great time at the show Saturday and even got invited back on Sunday! Two friends of mine had booths there and they got me media pass for the Sunday.
Participated in the Guinness Book World record for most staches in the same room. Unfortunately we were 900 short. Some guy named Tom Selleck beat us!
Fast forward to December 2013. I called the representative and had quick phone interview with them and our conversation went well, he ask for my resume and set up time to see them on January 7th,2014 at 11:00am
It was an amazing holiday season celebrating friends and family and bringing in 2014!
January 7th was quickly on the horized. I spent some time doing research on the company via their website and Facebook fan page. They had numerous videos they had done dealing with various questions about their industry. It was very good information!
The day had arrived and I show up at 10:30am (always early!) and was ready to speak to two people for the interview.
James Martin (Team Lead Professional Services) introduced himself and we proceeded to have a seat and start the conversation. He ask me various questions about my career and I layed out what I had been doing the last 2 years since I had left the transportation industry in November 2011.
I had been speaking and doing consulting for various corporate and small business groups all over Ontario. Was host and community manager for Camaraderie Coworking since March 2013 and part-owner of Richmond Hill Coworking November 2013. Had also 2 other revenue based business that I was doing.
He was very impressed with all this and ask me to come back at 12:00pm to meet with some else from the company, I agreed and went downstairs and had coffee at the Tim Horton's and caught up with some emails and phone calls.
I returned at lunch and met with Rocco Serpe ( Director of Sales Business Development) He has spend 15 years in the logistics and transportation industry with huge success. I had been in the industry for 7yr more in the operational. We had fantastic conversation!
The interviewed end and he stated he will call within the next few days.
I continued on my day and headed to meeting further west in Mississauga. At 2:00pm I got a phone call from the original contact I has spoken to in December. I was little surprised and excited!
He was calling to offer me the position and also invitation to their annual event in Niagara Falls on January 18-19. This was awesome news!

Get Connected 21st Century
Online
and Offline Strategies that work!
There are various ways to stayed connect in
the 21st Century from attending networking events to getting
connected online. Key question to ask is
what works for you? and how could this create long-term relationships that you
can leverage and even monetize!
Offline Strategies
I have been meeting people for many years,
in 2003 when I made to the decision to go out and learn more about business,
life and success and I met my 2 mentors who had significant impact in my
journey of success. Quickly realized that I need a strategy to connect and
engage when I was networking and meeting new people at events. Three areas are below
Presentation
What you say and how you dress are extremely important in making a great 1st impression, in the end you do only have one
chance to do it!
What you wear is a great start, being aware
of the type of event you are attending and who will be there is important
information to know prior to attending. You can do this by emailing or calling
the organizer, to checking out previous photos of event online.
Having a business card (information card)
is important tool to have. No matter if you are professional in transition or
season entrepreneur it’s important to have connection point.
Start with the conversation and introduce
yourself and engage in the conversation. If you feel there was a mutual you can
ask to exchange cards and so you can connect online or send them some
information you promised (ex. Book, Nice to meet you card)
Attitude
There is great statement “ Attitude is
everything” not matter how you feel, check your attitude at the door and be
open to have a memorable conversations.
What is the first thing you do when you
meet someone? You shake hands right! It’s important to do that correctly. I
have had many situations where I have “fish” handshakes, don’t think that
requires further explanation to heavy handed hand shakes. Important to
implement that the strategy below
Mirror and Matching which is exactly what
it sounds like, you merely match what they do to you. It may seem challenging
in the beginning, the more times you do it you will begin to find the rhythm
and connection point that works for you.
Lastly what you say and do is important,
having energy and little enthusiasm will go long way in bringing energy to the
environment. It will be “contagious” with others and you see it them smiling
and have more engaging conversations
Response
This the 3rd and most important
step this not effectively used in most cases. It’s about asking questions and
creating meaningful and engaging conversation.
It’s about asking great second question is where the magic begins. You
may introduce yourself and then ask a question, such as “Is this your first time at the event?” If they say
“No, it’s my first time” You can responded in congratulating them and
letting them know what will be happening for the evening. This make you host
and leverage tool for the entire evening. You can ask what they do and how they
got started in that industry.
As you do this process over and over you
will feel more comfortable and become an amazing networker!
In the next section will learn on to
leverage contacts from offline to online
Online
Strategies
Having an online presence is important tool
to have in the 21st Century, from leveraging the people you meet to
creating online connections to continue the conversation.
LinkedIn
This social networking site started in 2003
is very popular for many professionals and entrepreneur to be connected with.
Facebook and Twitter may get all the attention, LinkedIn is the social
networking to be a part of.
You can apply the strategies below to have
a great profile.
Connections
We can add connections daily online and
offline. We meet people face to face
every day at social gathering, events etc. Simply asking “’Are you on
LinkedIn?” during the conversation is a great way to add value.
Recommendations
Great feature where we can ask our networking
for recommendation. It can be from recent connection who heard you speak at an
event, to a previous employer you can give you recommendation.
Groups
You can share you expertise with various
groups and be part of the discussion forum. Most of them are open groups, there
are some which are closed and require to be invited to join.
Applying the above online and offline will
yield you success in growing you network in the long term and creating
relationship that could result in meeting future mentor, business alliances and
resource you can use in the future.
Make you connections work for you in the 21st
Century!

3 Ways to become a professional inviter
Three people say “No not interested” and then 4th person you speak says “Yes I am coming” this is just brief example but in the world of networking and speaking to different people you will meet in a given days or weeks ahead. Social media world has created the follower effect online which is a powerful movement. The only thing that can beat that is world of mouth marketing. Being a walking talking great networker can create interest in what you do and also path you take in your journey to create better value in attracting clients.
1. Events
Going to various events in your city you begin to better great understanding of the caliber of professionals and entrepreneurs you meet. As you do this you will get better understanding on the types of event and various entrepreneurs and professionals you will meet. Networking and exchange business cards you will begin to increase your list and resources.
When you are at a event you can ask specific what other events they will be attending in the coming weeks, you can make a big impact on building a long term relationship with them and help each other grow your businesses.
Have engaging conversation and ask key questions about their business and types of clients they are looking for will create an reciprocal interest in you.
“ You have two ears and one mouth, use them effectively and listen more”
2. Social Media
From Facebook, Linkedin and Twitter you can make daily comments as where you have gone and who you had met throughout the day. Take notice of the “like” feature and how many make comments about this. There are contacts that may be following you with interest because they are interested in your expertise or have met you in previous events.
Social Media as created this type of community and being aware of it can create an opportunity of emailing and calling this contacts to join you at other events. Reach and send an email or if they are online click on their name and engage in a conversation online. “Great to see you at the SOHO even last week. Would you be interested in joining me at the Small Business Forum I have an extra ticket?” Simple strategy to have group dynamic who are attending this upcoming event.
3. Phone call
Picking a business card and calling the script below can be a great way to invite people to other events. Hi John, this is Jim Pagiamtzis. We met at the International networking show last week. As I recall you said you had worked in the insurance industry there is an event happening next week in Toronto that I will be attending there will be ideal clients for your business, would like you to be my guest”
Having a strategy to utilize your network effectively will lead into stronger relationships with you contact and the ability to create better long term value in the future.
