An Apple a Day: Book Review

Jim's Review

We all have heard the saying "An Apple a day keeps the doctor away". In this book Joe Schwarcz Phd delves deep into food we eat and some the additives that you may not have been aware of are added daily to our foods.

9 out of 10 stars

About book

Eat salmon. It’s full of good omega-3 fats. Don’t eat salmon. It’s full of PCBs and mercury. Eat more veggies. They’re full of good antioxidants. Don’t eat more veggies. The pesticides will give you cancer.

Forget your dinner jacket and put on your lab coat: you have to be a nutritional scientist these days before you sit down to eat―which is why we need Dr. Joe Schwarcz, the expert who’s famous for connecting chemistry to everyday life. In An Apple a Day, he’s taken his thorough knowledge of food chemistry, applied it to today’s top food fears, trends and questions, and leavened it with his trademark lighthearted approach. The result is both an entertaining revelation of the miracles of science happening in our bodies every time we bite into a morsel of food, and a telling exploration of the myths, claims and misconceptions surrounding our obsession with diets, nutrition and weight.

Looking first at how food affects our health, Dr. Joe examines what’s in tomatoes, soy and broccoli that can keep us healthy and how the hundreds of compounds in a single food react when they hit our bodies. Then he investigates how we manipulate our food supply, delving into the science of food additives and what benefits we might realize from adding bacteria to certain foods. He clears up the confusion about contaminants, examining everything from pesticide residues, remnants of antibiotics, the dreaded trans fats and chemicals that may leach from cookware. And he takes a studied look at the science of calories and weighs in on popular diets.

An Apple a Day is a must-read book for anyone who looks forward to digesting the truth about what we eat.learn more and buy book

Amazing (true)story: On Sunday mornings you can usually find me playing ball hockey at Trinity Bellwoods Community Centre.
On this Sunday it was a cold walk to the location and it’s always exciting playing with some very talented and experienced players.
It was a quick and fast paced gamesand it was until the last few minutes it was to be more sweet and memorable.
The spectacular Shayne Maxwell was in net for our team and during a mad scramble Shayne’s says “Jim time to get off” I responded with “Shanye give me the ball now”
We proceed up the floor and I joined the play and like the hockey universe put the ball on my stick and I let a slapshot go and it beat the goalie! Scores!!! I did my mini celebration and I looked a Shayne and said “Now I am getting off!”
It was happy walk home on this day 🙂

 Thursday January 2,2025

It will be a day I will never forget!  (seriously)

In the last 6 months I have come across some vintage, rare collectibles in my neighborhood, mainly books, comics etc.. (will share in another post)

This day started normally I went for my morning walk to get some fresh air and put in my steps. In my neighborhood there are differently types of  book libraries some big , some small that mainly have books and sometimes movie, pens, games, occasionally electronics.

On this days I near then end of my walk and out of the corner of my eye I see these boxes on the sidewalk to I walk closer to take a look.

I get there and notices six boxes of puzzles and to the right a metal box so I open it up and what do I see!  The two cards below that are graded and additional 200 cards from of various other games.

I got really excited because some of these cards are rare and worth lots of money!!!

Get back to my office and pull out my phone to the Collectibles AI and scan both cards and what do I get Magical Ghost - Dark and Theinen The Great Spinx -Ultra rare have a combined worth of $2500.00 WOW

Later in the evening I went through the rest of the cards and they are worth approximately $300 with another 150 that still have to be evaluated

The moral of the story: Keep your eyes open because you never know what you may find out when you walk the neighborhood!
