Developing story....
"Bob Burg has been great inspiration to me through his book"
Jim Pagiamtzis
This week  will be the official release date for my friends, Bob Burg and John David Mann’s brand new parable, IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU. Written in the style of their huge international bestseller, THE GO-GIVER, the story is woven around captivating new characters who will both touch your heart and show you how to be the leader and influencer you’ve always known you can be.

Set once again in the fictional Pindar’s town (with some inside references readers of THE GO-GIVER will enjoy bumping into!), this book expands on the first book’s Third Law, “The Law of Influence,” showing what happens when an unexpectedly cagey mentor by the name of Aunt Elle takes the ambitious young Ben under her wing and shifts his focus in a way he never expected.

The book is filled with quotes you’ll use the rest of your life! And if you currently lead a team, my guess is you’ll most likely suggest that everyone on your team read it.

If you like, you can go to www.INAYbook.com and download Chapters One and Two. If you like what you read (and I believe you will) you can click right through and purchase online, or wait and pick it up at your favorite local booksellers.

You’re going to love this book.

Learn, prosper, and most of all, enjoy!

Spotlight: Cheryl Rankin

As we head into a 2011 its important to realize that networking is an ongoing process. Have had the opportunity to share the stage with Cheryl Rankin of Fit For Business and want give you insight on how to approach the next few weeks in a proactive manner

Question 1.
Networking is all about approach what do you recommend to create an effective conversation online?

-- Networking online is about two things.  One is consistency; be sure to get on your social media listings at least once a day.  If possible try to change up what time of day so different people will see the posts that you do.  If you only post once in awhile then no one will be watching for your post and / or trust that you might read their posts.  Two is ‘help other people’; try to make sure that most of your posts are helpful ones.  If you are always selling your stuff then people will start to ignore your posts because they already know what it is and have no reason to read it.

Question 2.
You have either attended and / or hosted your own networking events, have you learned anything new that has sharpened your approach when meet new people at events?

-- Most people attend events so they can sell their own products and services.  Knowing that they have this focus; I try to help them before giving them and info about my company.  If I can tell them that before they leave the event that I will introduce them to a good candidate for them (even name the other person) I then tell them what I do and ask them to help me.  I do not ask them to buy – I ask them to listen for clients for me since I have helped them.

Learnapoolza at ING Direct Cafe

Awesome ING Cafe was the place to be to learn about 4 Step process to Storytelling Success presented by Shawn Phelps. Experienced consultant, Editor and facilitator.
In less than 1 hour she guided us through the process using her experience and engaging the crowd on their feedback created very intense environment. (even the ambulance and helicopters didn’t break our focus).

Four Steps of Story Branding Process are
1.     Fact Mining
2.     Fact Farming
3.    Shaping
4.     Congruency (sharing your story)

Going through example on how she shaped the story of her clients to create  more impactful presence to their clients.

Sharing media stories from Magnum ice cream to Paris Hilton created a frenzy of discussion on how important at story is in marketing a brand or yourself.
Having a process is important process to follow to make sure you are staying on course with you idea, and how to make it impactful to your audience.

As the hour was nearing the end, we separated in two groups 5 and brainstormed an idea from 2 participants. Great exercise to utilize the process and see it in action, information shared by everyone was to the point and lots of notes were being taken by all.

We were very impressed on how we all learned, did and apply these simple steps to create an outcome to benefit all the participants and bring encouragement and empowerment to their journey of success.

Big thanks to ING Direct staff for the mini treats that were offered during our session.

Networking Like A Canadian Pro

Networking Like A Canadian Pro
By Consuelo Solar
It was the first week of spring, and a large group of well-dressed media professionals stood in clumps in the packed top floor of The Spoke Club in Toronto to engage in a networking evening organized by Mediabistro (www.mediabistro.com).
At the beginning, most people were clutching their drinks, while awkwardly trying to make eye contact with any friendly face, but soon the event’s host called the audience to order: “No wallflowers tonight; let’s mingle and make some meaningful connections; shame on you if you didn’t bring your business cards!”
With a convinced “Let’s work the room, and see how many cards I get,” Candice A., an interactive media producer, started shaking hands, and asking people “What do you do? What brings you here?” Meanwhile a lively former speed dating facilitator was reciting from her own beginner’s guide to successful networking: “Everybody is here for the same reason, and they feel as awkward as you do, so just walk up to someone and say ‘hello’, they’ll be thrilled you did it first.”
Hundreds of events like this one are held around the country every month, for all industries. The reason is simple: networking is crucial in a country where about 80% of job openings are not publicized. “Your network can help provide introductions to opportunities that would otherwise be unknown to you. The majority of those un-posted jobs are filled based on recommendations. The old saying ‘it’s not what you know, but who you know’ lives true today,” observes Kiersten Anas, Director of Programs and Operations at the Women’s Executive Network (WXN, www.wxnetwork.com).
According to Anas, no networking is bad networking, and every contact can be useful, but with so many possibilities it is important to be strategic about it. If a job seeker has a particular professional goal in mind, it is best to narrow the events down to those related to specific fields. WXN events cater to executives with at least six years' experience in a management role in any type of industry, and they are currently developing an initiative for new Canadian female professionals, which they hope to unveil this year. “The intention for this new offering will be to help immigrant professionals as they ascend into more senior positions. This will be done through peer support and knowledge sharing from fellow new Canadian WXN members, as well as through access to professionals who can provide insights into Canadian corporate culture,” Anas explains.
These types of programs are designed to address the unique concerns and challenges immigrants face when trying to build a professional network. “If you are Canadian you have initial contacts to build your network, but when you are new to Canada you don’t always know who to talk to first,” says Manjeet Dhiman, Senior Director of Services and Business Development at ACCES Employment (www.accestrain.com). She adds, “It’s important to get newcomers to understand that this is a common approach in the North American business world, and giving them the tools and the venues makes them more comfortable in networking and soliciting information.”
Many sector-specific events take the form of dinners or luncheons that require payment, but considering that for most emerging professionals money is tight, Dhiman advises to do a good research before making that kind of investment. “I wouldn’t encourage anybody to spend money on an event unless they knew a lot about it. Generally, people don’t need to pay to build the right networks,” she notes.
A traditional strategy to expand an up-and-comer’s networking relationships is mentoring, but mentors willing to commit a lot of their time are scarce. For this reason, Acces offers the speed mentoring series, with an average of thirty events per year, where professionals from different industries volunteer a few hours to share useful information with job seekers. Participants are prescreened to guarantee good matches, and they attend an orientation on how to get the best out of the event. Each mentee can meet with a minimum of seven mentors for about ten minutes, which in most cases is enough to make a connection.
So I Have Twenty Cards In My Pocket… Now What? By the end of the night at the Mediabistro event, someone approached Candice A., and in a rush, asked for her card. She told him she didn’t bring any, “shame on me”, she laughed, but the truth was she simply didn’t think this was a right connection. “You should only hand your card to people you have a real conversation with. This guy won’t remember me tomorrow,” she remarked.
Ivan Guisao agrees. He is finishing his MBA at York’s Schulich School of Business, and already has two job offers thanks to a couple of connections he made at networking events. “It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality,” he says, and adds, “If I go to an event with fifty people, I much rather meet three or four, but have ten or fifteen minutes with each, so that when I write to them they’ll know who I am, and I’ll have something to talk to them about, because we had a chance to find common interests.”
Subtlety is key when approaching a new connection after an event, however “It would be overwhelming to the other person if the first thing you did was to call or email them asking for help. So it’s about opening up a dialogue, and a “thank you” email can be really effective for that. The sooner you send it the better, so within a day or two is perfectly appropriate,” advises Dhiman.
Carol Mayberry, Information Specialist at PCPI (www.pcpi.ca) proposes to take full advantage of digital communication by sending articles of interest, invitations to other events, or asking them to connect through social media websites such as LinkedIn.
Guisao is an active member of the Latin American MBA Alumni Network (LAMBA, www.lambanet.ca), whose objective is to integrate and provide networking opportunities among MBA students, graduates and the Canadian business community, and he has been participating in their gatherings since it’s launch in 2010. “I attended their first event, and made a connection with an MBA who was already working. Afterwards, that person introduced me to somebody else, who eventually offered me a job. For me is the best example of how powerful networking can be”.

Hi Jim,

You don't know me yet, but I've been meaning to email you for some time now. I've read about you, and articles by you. It was your advice of "The secret to your success is your daily routine" that I have taken to heart. I have implemented 2-3 daily routines that have completely changed my health, and the quality of my work. It was your recommended reading "Think And Grow Rich" which made some interest point Business, Life, Success.

We share one common interest - becoming effective networkers, and helping others grow themselves and their businesses. I've followed in your footsteps and have been studying this area of business called networking, religiously. My long-term goal is to set up an entrepreneurship school, where student's learn not by reading, studying, or sitting in a classroom, but where student's DO and create RESULTS. This is, as Napoleon Hill calls it, one of my two most BURNING DESIRES.

I admire you and your desire to help others, and it would be my pleasure to be of service to you. If there is any way in which I can help you, Willows Book Store, or Metroactive... if there is any challenge you're facing or an opportunity that you're going after right now, just let me know.

Word11 Blogging Festival - the Birthplace of this Blog

on Fri, 09/02/2011 - 17:29

The excerpt below from my "About" page gives you an idea of how this blog got started.
More specifically, it was at this bonfire that I started this website.  It was an ongoing fun time around the fire with jokes, teasing and laughter.
The video gives you a glimpse of what I mean.  The group has been chatting throughout the night and that was 6:20 am in the morning.  The group was still having so much fun!

The Birthing Place of this Blog - WORD11 Festival, Toronto
Thanks to WORD11 - the world first ever 24 hour blogging festival in Toronto, taking place just one week ago on August 23-24.  Veteran and novice bloggers came together for a one-day event to discuss, teach or learn about blogging and its impact on our life.  The interesting feature of this event was its duration - 24 hours.  Yes, that right, participants were encouraged, if not expected to stay up throughout the night to hang out, build relationships and may be blog throughout the night!
I was not thinking of staying 24 hours at all!  But evening came and I got very energized by the energy around me.  There were great people,   Then, in the evening, after a full day of workshops, I was sitting and chatting with blogging gurus, who have used blogging to leverage business and communication.  I told them, somewhat bashfully, about my passion to start a blog on these stories and to my pleasant surprise, they responded to my stories with great enthusiasm and said that I should definitely blog about them.  That was probably 2:30 am in the morning, and I was charged!
The rest was history...I then went back to with the group to the Honest Ed’s parking lot, the designated place where the festival bond fire (well a small one, but significant nonetheless) was held and the group gathered to make through the night via chatting, teasing and heartfelt jokes.  There was constant uproar of laughter throughout the night.
I was blogging while the group chatted, and I constantly got my questions answered by the blogging gurus around me. They are generous and helpful.  So, within a few hours, I started my first website, made a few blog entries, started my youtube accounts with new video uploads and also became a twitter.   All because of the community around me.  The video showed the bond fire and also the laughter.

Viola, here you are at the result of the inexplicable energy of that night.  Enjoy the reads...
